UNIVERSITY CENTER – New and returning students will have to dig a little deeper when registering for fall classes.

The Delta College board of trustees approved the tuition and fee schedule for the 2020/2021 school year on Tuesday, March 10.

The current tuition rate will see a $2 increase starting this fall. This means the following costs per credit hour will be in effect:

  • In-district (Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties) tuition per credit hour: $117
  • Out-of-district tuition per credit hour: $199
  • Out-of-state cost per credit hour: $373

In addition, technology and online course fees are getting a $1 bump to $21 and $34, respectively, per course. The overall increase in tuition and fees clocks in at 2.18%.

Delta College president Jean Goodnow and treasurer Sarah DuFresne stated in a memo to the board the tuition increase is based on the rate of inflation.

“This met our objective of staying within the rate of inflation and well below the tuition constraint proposed by [Governor Gretchen Whitmer],” the memo said.

Whitmer, in her proposed budget for the 2021 and 2022 fiscal years, recommended a total funding of $433.8 million for community colleges in Michigan, a 2.5% increase over 2020. Her budget includes a tuition increase cap of 4.25% for community colleges.

The 26-member budget cabinet – which consists of Delta faculty, staff and one trustee – evaluated multiple factors when making these budget decisions, including the existing tuition/fee structure, tuition/fee rates at other Michigan colleges and universities, student enrollment projections, and overall budget and financial impact.
