Trayvon Martin’s family attorney to speak at Ricker Center

In honor of Black History Month, Delta College and SVSU have worked together to bring Jasmine Rand, attorney for Trayvon Martin’s family, to the Tri-City area. Rand will speak at the Ricker Center, 4605 Webber St. Saginaw, at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2 about issues pertaining to social justice and will take questions from members of the community.

“A lot of times we see things in the media and we don’t know what we can do about them,” says John Neal, multicultural and diversity coordinator. “A lot of people feel that they don’t know their rights, and they’re not really equipped in knowing what they can do, or what resources there are that can help them.”

Neal hopes that students will better understand what they can do to prevent injustice in their lives and in their communities. “We want as many students to come as possible. It isn’t a black/white thing at all. It’s all about knowledge.”

Rand is an accomplished attorney, professor, columnist and civil rights activist. She has appeared on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News as a consultant and is the founder of Miami based litigation firm RAND LAW, L.L.C.
