The coronavirus: keeping calm and living on

Mondays were very busy days for me.

I start Mondays off by working at a law firm from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. After my shift, I immediately start my half-hour journey to Delta for my biology class at 5 p.m. I sit through long lectures and strain my eyes while looking through a microscope until the clock hits 8 p.m.

Then I drive another half-hour to my house. During that drive, my thoughts are racing. I worry about how I will be home late for the next three nights while also trying to find time and ways to finish my homework. By the time I get home and eat my microwave dinner, I am too exhausted to do anything but sleep.

However, thanks to the coronavirus, my Mondays now look like this. Even though my biology professor constantly posts new assignments, I can now enjoy my attendance in class since it’s become virtual. I can work on assignments and labs with the comfort of my moral support dog and the theme song of The Office.

Additionally, I was able to gain more hours at work, which is something I could only do in the summer. Even with the courthouses being closed for the month, the attorneys at the law firm recognized the importance of staying on top of caseloads and putting money in its employees’ pockets. Therefore, we continue to work.

I never realized how much I appreciated my job until businesses started to close. My current drive to work consists of empty roads with vacant parking lots. The empty parking lots made our business stick out, since three rows of parking spaces were filled with SUVs and my 2007 Chevy Malibu.

Some daycares were also closed for an unknown period. The attorneys at the law firm accepted the fact that people would have issues with finding sitters for their kids, so they allowed their employees to bring their children to work, if necessary. This made life at a professional law firm interesting. While I was filing, I would find myself in a Tik Tok, hosted by six children. I also enjoyed answering phone calls while a boy in cowboy boots screamed and chased a girl dressed as Elsa from Frozen.

While the unknown future still brings fear in my life, I try to take it day by day. I continue to find peace in the simple things and in the comfort of my home. I do my best to keep calm because life always moves on, even if it’s at a slower pace than I’m used to.
