Staying safe during a school shooting

By Misty Barron

In the event of a school shooting, it is crucial to know what to do to keep yourself and others safe. The following steps can help you stay as safe as possible.

Run: If it is safe to do so, run away from the shooter as quickly as possible. Encourage others to come with you, but do not wait for anyone who is hesitant.

Hide: If you cannot escape, hide in a secure location, such as a locked classroom or office. Turn off the lights and silence your phone. Use large items to hide behind and barricade the door with any available furniture.

Fight: If the shooter enters your location and there is no way to escape or hide, be prepared to fight back. Use any object as a weapon and aim for the shooter’s head or eyes. If you are with others, work together to stop the threat.

It is important to stay calm and alert during a school shooting. Follow the directions of law enforcement and avoid approaching them unless directed. If you can call 911, provide as much information as possible about the shooter’s location and appearance. Do not move injured persons. Wait for rescue teams to evacuate them safely.

Every situation is different, and there is no guaranteed way to stay safe during a school shooting. However, following these steps can  increase your chances of survival.
