Sock It Up to Comfort

In society how we dress shows others how we represent ourselves. Over time we have seen styles come back while others have faded away. Whether it’s Covid-19 pandemic relaxed style or society being on the more accepting side of non-visible illnesses, going out in what would be lounge house wear is now the norm. If sweat pants, leggings, a hoodie is acceptable attire for out in public, then so are sock with sandals.  It’s a highly debatable outfit of choice that either is a joke, quick convenience, or a fashion no. Socks do go with sandals.

Comfort is the number one choice when getting dressed and the other inconvenience. Socks with sandals give people comfort while still wearing sandals. I myself am an avid runner and have what is known as runner’s feet and sometimes sport a missing toenail and it’s embarrassing to see people look at my feet. There is nothing better than after a long run or race taking off your shoes and sliding on super comfortable slip-on sandals. I do not dare take off my socks in fear of what others might see when I finish my race.

Celebrating your victory at dinner in your game uniform or a quick bite to eat in your practice clothing after a long practice, athletes can be seen wearing dirty clothing, long socks, slip-on sandals, and smiles. Having children in sports or remembering being a child that played a sport that required cleats meant you wore your uniform or practice clothing when you left the house except for your cleats, you always had a pair of slip-on sandals handy for game or practice day and you didn’t dare walk around your house in cleats or get in the car with dirty cleats.

Covid-19 pandemic has taught us to be a little bit more laid back with the clothing we wear since we are not routinely going out in public and rely on technology to do most of our biddings like working from home or grocery shopping. Wearing our sweatpants, hoodies, and sandals with or without socks out has become acceptable out in public at restaurants, or even in the classroom. Whether you were raised to look presentable out in public or not socks with sandals isn’t as bad as it appears when you take into consideration that fanny packs, mullets, and printed designed leggings made a comeback. Sock with sandals can serve many purposes for athletes or be just for comfort but it will always be here to stay and will always be a highly debated topic in most households especially my own.
