With the season winding down, the Pioneers were looking to end the season on a high note. In their way was a Schoolcraft team that thrashed them, 65-94, on Jan. 23. Delta showed they had improved from the last meeting, but they did not quite do enough in this one to get over the hump. The Pioneers looked good on offense, shooting over 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from three, but it was their poor defensive rebounding that did them in. They were outrebounded 23-40 and all those extra rebounds led to 24 second chance points for Schoolcraft.
“We just need to get back on defense to stop transition baskets and communicate better on the floor with our defensive rotations,” says Point Guard Jon Swift.
Delta has been pulling out more of the close games as of late, but they could not sustain their lead in this one. The game was back and forth all game long until Schoolcraft pulled away near the end of the second half.
“Our composure needs to be better in close game situation like this, and we just need to limit our turnovers late in the game,” says Swift.
The loss hurts Delta’s seeding for the upcoming District 10 tournament, as their chances of getting home field in the opening round are slim. The team has one more game in the regular season against St. Clair. This will be parent’s night on Feb. 24.
“You just have to learn from your mistakes in games like these,” explains Head Coach Carlos McMath. “We’ll go over the film and see what we have to do to get from ‘what if’ to ‘right.’ ”
