One of the newest faces gracing the court for the Delta College men’s basketball team is Essexville Garber graduate Trey Newsham. The 18-year-old, first year Pioneer is known for his quick release and court presence earning him a plethora of nicknames but most notably ‘Trigga’ Trey.
Newsham played a key role in taking the Garber Dukes to the Class B state quarterfinals in both his senior and junior years. During his high school career, Newsham was named to the first team all-conference two years in a row, won three district championships, and made it into the All State Class B 1,000 point club.
For the Pioneers, Newsham hops on the court in a couple different position including PG, SG, SF, and PF. With the key group of role players that the Pioneers have on the team this year Newsham sees a great future for the team.
“We’re an entertaining team to watch,” Newsham says, “It should be exciting. I’d like to see a good crowd going and hopefully we can get to districts.”
The Pioneers welcomed Newsham with open arm and are certainly seeing what he brings to the table. Through four games this season Newsham averages 13.5 points per game and has a FG percentage just below 47. His best performance yet came in the 106-79 win against Pitt-Titusville when he racked up 19 points, making 50 percent of his shots and 55.6 percent of his three point attempts.
“The teams a real family, and they really embraced me,” says Newsham.
Since his younger days he’s been fascinated with the game of basketball and has been playing since the sixth grade. He’d love to extend his basketball career as long as he can much like the other members of the Pioneer squad. “We have a lot of guys that could take their talents to the next level,” Newsham says.
Newsham is undecided on his field of study just yet although he is planning on going into business and transferring to a four year university in Michigan.
