Opinion – The power of algebra

By Dennis Martin, Guest Columnist.

Algebra is the cornerstone of business, and the key to understanding the universe. It is the tool used to find any unknown quantity. For example, when it is combined with trigonometry, the speed needed to arrive somewhere on time can be calculated. When used correctly, algebra can make its users seem to have prophetic powers. But how can a struggling algebra student unlock the key to this knowledge?

Here are some steps to follow:

  1. Use the math tutoring center. Delta College has an excellent math tutoring center located in the library. Please make use of it.
  2. Form a study group. Not only can this make learning algebra easier, but it is a great way to make new friends.
  3. Be responsible. Make sure to give yourself enough time to study and do assignments.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It may seem like your professors are extremely busy, but it is their job to help students learn.
  5. Slow down and understand each concept as you go. It is pointless to build a skyscraper without having first made a strong foundation.

By using these key steps, you too can learn algebra which, according to U.S. Brigadier General Hazel Johnson-Brown, is the “competitive edge in the ever expanding technological development for the college graduate.”
