EAST LANSING – Michigan State University Police have provided an update regarding the ongoing shooting at their campus.

In a press briefing provided by Officer Chris Rocman various details were clarified, though he mentioned the information was “preliminary” and subject to change.

The police confirmed there is only one shooter, combating social media claims that there were three acting in unison. The suspect was described as a short, Black man, who was wearing red shoes, a jean jacket, and a ballcap. Additionally, he was last seen leaving on foot from the Union building.

The shooting began at Berkey Hall, around 8:18 p.m. After wounding “several”, the suspect moved to the nearby Union building, where he injured more, according to the police.

“I can confirm that there were at least five victims,” Rocman said. “All five victims were transported to the hospital.”

Some of them had “life-threatening” injuries, according to the update.

Law enforcement had an “overwhelming” response to the calls, with “hundreds” of local, state, and federal agents being present.

The police reminded everyone to remind sheltered in place, and cautioned against believing social media or police scanner reports.

“There has been false reports,” he said.

Given the situation is ongoing, the officers have committed to giving a press briefing at the top of each hour, and ask that people follow their twitter account, @msupolice, for updates. Also, they ask that people do not come to campus during this time.
