Leadership in higher education: ACE women’s network

By MARISA LORANGER, Staff Reporter.

On Jan. 14, Dr. Reva Curry, Delta College Vice President, and Dr. Amie Anderson, Dean of Students, got together to present a lecture on the importance of mentorship and getting ahead in the workplace through the American Council on Education or ACE.

ACE is a women’s network with 41 institutions that focuses on leadership and advocacy. The purpose is to have a voice for education and giving mobility to women and minorities. Curry was adamant that the ACE meetings do not discriminate against men and they are welcome to come.

ACE is there to support teachers, to help get them to the next step in their careers. Anderson realized through ACE that being a faculty member wasn’t her calling and that she could get a higher position at work. Through support from ACE and friends, Anderson was motivated to apply for the position of dean and she got the job.

“As women we don’t see ourselves at our highest potential,” Anderson explained.

Curry and Anderson see it as their job at Delta to help professors move up to leadership positions. Growing a mentoring group at Delta is a goal of theirs.

“President Goodnow is very supportive of the initiative,” Curry says.

Curry and Anderson will be having a ACE Network Book Club starting Jan. 30 from 12 p.m to 12:50 p.m. in the lower West Courtyard by the Veteran’s Office. They will be reading “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead” by Sheryl Sandberg and Neil Scovell.
