This Earth Day celebrate by planting a tree. Need a tree? Stop by Delta College’s main campus and pick up a free tree seedling from the Environmental Club on April 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the West Main Hallway near the gym.
Follow these steps to plant a tree:
- First, pick a cool and cloudy day to plant your tree, preferably in early spring.
- Next dig a hole as deep as the length of the roots and three times as wide.
- Gently and lightly loosen the roots so that they aren’t curled up, then place the plant in the hole.
- Refill the hole till the topmost roots are covered.
- Gently tamp the soil down to eliminate air pockets.
- Add a layer of mulch if desired, but make sure to leave a two-inch gap between the trunk of the tree and the mulch.
- Water the tree deeply every seven to ten days. Continue watering it during dry periods for the first few years until established.
