A student New Year’s resolution part six

Five ways you can live more environmentally friendly in the new year

By Misty Barron

Every New Year’s millions of people make resolutions to change for the better. Many pledge to lose weight, quit smoking, or do something else to benefit their health. But what about the health of the planet? Here are five ways you can live more environmentally friendly in the new year.

Use less paper and recycle more

In a world becoming more reliant on digital technology and computers, cutting back on paper is easy to do.

Rather than writing notes, use your phone to keep track of lists and small reminders. Replace disposable paper towels with a soft, washable cloth.

If you must use paper for work or school, recycle. According to the EPA, approximately 33% of all waste is paper. You can help reduce this number by recycling work and school papers, cardboard, and other unneeded paper products. It takes less energy to make paper from recycled products than “virgin” paper.

Ditch your paper or plastic bags for canvas

Most stores now offer canvas bags as an alternative to plastic and paper. Although canvas might cost you a small amount, they have many uses besides getting your groceries home. Canvas bags are sturdier than traditional bags and can hold more items. They are also useful for storing things around the house, packing to move, or carrying heavy items.

Reduce water waste

You can keep your New Year’s resolution to live more eco-friendly by reducing the amount of water you use and consume. Taking shorter showers and not buying bottled water are simple ways you can help the planet.

If you live somewhere that does not have tasty tap water, buying a filter will elevate your drinks to bottle-quality. Installing a low-flow showerhead will not only help conserve water but will reflect on your next water bill too.

Borrow instead of buy

The next time you want to pick up a new book, or buy an entire set for camping, look into borrowing instead. Check books out at the library, ask a friend to borrow a tent, or check out programs like Delta’s Closet to make an impression at your next interview

Save energy and save money

There are many ways you can cut back on energy use in your home. Doing so will help you save money on your energy bill and help the planet too. Turning down your thermostat in the winter and up in the summer makes a big difference. When possible, wash your clothes in cold water and use a drying rack. Unplug appliances not being used and turn off lights when you’re not in the room. Conserving energy in your home is as easy as clicking a button.
