How to Overcome Burnout

By Hal Reed

We’re reaching the point in the semester where extreme burnout is upon us. Assignments keep piling up, deadlines seem to appear out of nowhere and the motivation to keep going no longer exists. Still, between the stress and late nights, burnout can happen to anyone and everyone. Here are a few tricks and tips that might help ease the feeling and bring back a little motivation.

Taking breaks in between

Sometimes the best way to get through a long study session is to step away for a few minutes. Short breaks can make it easier to refocus and reset when you get back to work. Even five to 10 minutes can make a difference.

Crafts

Doing something creative can be a great way to reset your brain. Easy activities like drawing, painting or making something small can help you relax and take your mind off schoolwork for a bit. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment outside of all the work.

Walking outside

A quick walk outside can help boost your mood and energy. Fresh air and a change of scenery can make you feel less stuck and more refreshed when you return. Even a short walk around campus can help clear your head.

Getting off Social Media

Scrolling on TikTok can easily turn a five-minute break into an hour. Limiting time on these apps can help you stay on track, but also can be dangerous when it’s used to ignore the work you need to get done. Sometimes putting your phone down completely is the best way to stay productive.

Changing your study spot

Staring at the same desk for hours can make burnout feel even worse. Switching locations like moving to a coffee shop, library or different room can help refresh your mind and make studying feel less repetitive.
