Financial literacy week to teach students saving techniques

By Cameron Kerkau, Staff Reporter.

Are you a broke college kid? Delta College’s Financial Literacy Week, from Feb. 8 to Feb. 11, will give students multiple opportunities to become more financially savvy.

“It’s making people more knowledgeable about finances. When I was in college it would’ve been really great for me to go through some of these programs,” says Campus Life and Student Engagement Coordinator Alison Ginter. “We thought we’d make things more user friendly, because we know that [students] are really busy. That way if you have questions, or want more knowledge, you can just come down and talk to the person instead of having to take a whole hour and listen through a whole speaker. “

  • On Thursday, Feb. 11,  from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Team One Credit Union will be on the main campus answering questions from students and providing information on savings, checking, and retirement accounts.
  • Possible Dream and Youth Development Coordinator Dorian Phelps has created a “Fun on a Dime” slideshow that will teach students inexpensive ways to have a good time. The presentation will be shown at the Midland Center on Tuesday, Feb. 9, the Planetarium on Wednesday, Feb. 10, and the Ricker Center on Thursday, Feb. 11 all taking place at 1 p.m.
  • Wanigas Credit Union will provide a presentation in room N-009 on Tuesday, Feb. 9.
  • On Wednesday, Feb. 10, there will be a cash cube in the lower west student lounge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will enter and attempt to catch as much money as they can while it’s being blown around the cube.
  • On Thursday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. in N-007 the State of Michigan will be hosting an informational session on the Affordable Care Act.
  • On Wednesday is the 52-week challenge presentation at the lower west student lounge where students will learn a new technique for saving money.
  • Also on Thursday, Elvina Sika will be providing Financial Aid information at 11:30 a.m. in the main campus mezzanine.
