Fair on campus for students seeking success

By Kaitlyn “Harper” Skrzypczak, Editor-in-Chief.

Are you an incoming freshman? A transfer student? Coming back for a new degree 20 years after graduating? If this is you, or you’re just unfamiliar with all the services Delta offers, the Student Services Fair is an important fall tradition you won’t want to miss.

Thursday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. a variety of organizations will be available to provide resources and talk to students. Hallways on the East and West side of the courtyard will be lined with clubs, student services and community organizations.

The goal of the fair is to “help break down some of the barriers students have for success in college and try and provide them with connections with services that can assist them,” says Jennifer Gaumer, an academic advisor with Delta’s Counseling and Advising Center.

Gaumer is on the Student Services Fair committee and this is her second year with the event.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with some things on campus that can help them if they’re struggling here,” says Gaumer.

Some of the student services that will be in attendance are: the tutoring and learning center, financial aid, the fitness center, and printing services.

The two biggest barriers to student success, according to Gaumer, are financing and transportation.

The Delta College Foundation office will be in attendance to help with the financial struggle many students face in paying for college. The foundation offers scholarships to students and has raised more than “$90 million in private sector donations,” according to their website.

The community organizations that Gaumer and the Student Services Fair committee have asked to attend are ones that “provide services for students or allows students to have some kind of experience with their organization, like through a volunteer experience.” It’s important to the committee that they “are low cost or no cost to students.”
