Eight ways a #greenthumb can provide benefits during quarantine

Should gardening supplies and seeds be considered non-essential? (Haeley Huggard/Reporter)

SAGINAW – Have you ever tried to have your own garden at home? If you are looking for a new hobby to help you get through these difficult times, having an at-home garden might be worth trying.

In the recent weeks, many people felt upset because of large retail companies closing off sections of their stores that have been deemed non-essential. Sections such as toys, housewares and gardening are a few of those sections.

However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot purchase these items. Other businesses such as Tractor Supply Co. are still carrying seeds and plants. In addition, Lowes was confirmed to be selling pre-grown vegetable plants, such as tomatoes. You can also find a variety of plants and seeds online at sites such as Amazon.

But what are the outcomes of having plants and small gardens at home?

1.  Watching a plant grow up can be rewarding

The benefits of having your own garden vary depending on the lens that you see it through. For example, there is a sense of accomplishment for taking a small seed and turning it into a fully grown plant, especially one that bears fruit or vegetables.

2.       30 minutes of gardening can be the calm you need

Gardening can lower your blood pressure if you do it for 30 to 45 minutes. Physical exercise is good for us, so why not grow plants and exercise at the same time?

3.       Fresh food is the best food

If you choose to grow edible plants, this can lead to healthier eating habits. In addition to eating better, you also know where the food came from. Let’s face it — nobody wants to eat a tomato that’s had work done!

4.       Work those hands!

Gardening is also great for improving dexterity and hand strength. With just a little bit of love and gardening each day, it can help us maintain hand strength as we start to get older.

5.       Breathing and decorating is always a bonus

Having house plants around are good for us too. They can help keep the air in our homes clean and they look nice. Just be sure not to overwater the more meticulous house plants, such as orchids or croton. These kinds of houseplants are great hobby plants to have during COVID-19 but are not great if you plan on giving them less attention once we’re able to go out again.

6.      Having an herb garden can mean tastier food

Having an herb garden in your home is a fun hobby. You can have one or two herbs growing in your windowsill so they don’t take up a large amount of space, and you can use them to add fresh spices to your meals.

7.       Having plants for decoration is always trendy

Plants such as cactuses or succulents are great decorations and they don’t require much work. These types of plants are also good for people who do not have a green thumb.

8.       For every person there is a plant

The great thing about house plants is that there is a plant for every kind of person. Plants are unique, just like you and me. Even though some groups of plants are similar, no two plants are exactly the same.
