Most people save their interest in terror for Halloween, but not Delta student Cicily Bula. With her talent for special effects makeup, Bula creates real life horror scenes. According to Bula, her love for artform l began in October 2014.

Bula says, “I was looking online and I stumbled across a tutorial for special effects. I made a wound on my thigh, that was my first big project, and since then I’ve been learning, and teaching myself.”

Creating realistic artwork is why Bula loves special effects. Some common effects she enjoys making include blisters or a torn elbow.

“My favorite part of special effects is the gore. I like everything bloody, cuts and wounds look so cool. I also like making glass shards coming out of the wounds I make” says Bula.

Bula describes some of her past pieces as wickedly gross, but impossible to look away from.

“I’ve done a couple of beaten-up faces. The elbow piece I did had skin hanging off the prosthetic, and it was really meaty in the middle. I use latex to create blisters on my knuckles and then colored them in, like a puss color, to give the piece a realistic effect,” says Bula.

Bula plans to attend Douglas Education Center in Pennsylvania next summer. She will be enrolled in Tom Savini’s Special Effects Program. The program is a two year, associate degree course.

According to Bula, the program is all hands on experience, which is what she is looking forward to the most.

“After I graduate, I’d love to be on Faceoff. I think it would be amazing to be on a competition show like that,” says Bula.

Movies are also in Bula’s future plans. She states that there would be nothing better than to be working alongside a director to create a final product and visual masterpiece.

“My dream job would be working on movie sets in California. I’m excited to see what will happen in the future. I can’t wait,” says Bula.
