Anthony Bernard attends Delta College as a student athlete playing baseball as a pitcher. Due to the circumstances, Delta College closed its campus and made classes online through the rest of the winter semester. Bernard’s transition to online classes due to COVID-19 hasn’t been smooth.
“I have struggled with motivating myself to sit down and get my homework accomplished, especially because playing baseball was a big motivation to keep up on my studies,” says Bernard.
Baseball practices and games haven’t been able to continue. With the season just starting, it came to a sudden end, which was a disappointment. Along with Bernard’s normal routine, he works at Saginaw Knitting Mills.
“While I still am working, work has been very slow and I have taken an extreme cut of hours weekly,” says Bernard.
Along with this sad news, Bernard also hasn’t been able to visit some of the loved ones dear to him. Bernard’s mom is currently in a rehabilitation facility where she is receiving the help she needs to get better, but the government has shut down visitation into the facility due to COVID-19.
Bernard’s great grandmother is 87 years old and lives on her own, and she isn’t able to be in contact with him. Bernard typically visits his great grandma weekly and acts as a caregiver. But with her bad heart, she has been all alone, for the protection of her health.
“It’s sad, because I worry about [my mom and my great grandma] all the time and now I’m not able to see them or make sure they are alright,” says Bernard.
Bernard’s normal routine for school, sports, family and work has been interrupted by this viral disease.
Bernard is a busybody and has been self-quarantined for the last week, besides leaving only for work a few hours on certain days. He expressed that video games such as “Madden” and “MLB: The Show” have taken up a lot of his time, including watching Netflix.
