Celebrate Veteran’s Day

By: April Hernandez

November is upon us, and it holds one of the most significant days in our nation. Veteran’s Day, observed on Nov.11 each year, is not just another day off work or school. It’s a day when we come together as a nation to express our gratitude, honor, and respect for the brave men and women who have selflessly served in the United States military.

In 1919, the world celebrated the end of World War I, and in its aftermath, Armistice Day was established to commemorate this momentous occasion. It was a day of reflection, marked by the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, when the ceasefire in the Great War went into effect. However, it wasn’t until 1954, under the leadership of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, that the holiday was officially renamed Veterans Day to honor not only World War I veterans but all American veterans from every conflict.

Across the country, communities come alive with celebrations to honor our veterans. Parades, ceremonies, and events take place, allowing us to connect with and express our gratitude to the heroes among us. The National Moment of Remembrance Act, passed in 2000, encourages all Americans to pause and observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time on Veteran’s Day. This simple yet meaningful gesture unites us in remembrance and appreciation for our veterans. This holiday is a time to express gratitude for the sacrifices and service of our veterans.
