UNIVERSITY CENTER – A traveling exhibit exploring the history of work in the United States is now open in Saginaw.

The Castle Museum of Saginaw County History welcomes “The Way We Worked,” which opened Saturday, Feb. 8 and will remain at the museum until Sunday, Aug. 16.

Created by the National Archives, “The Way We Worked” is a national touring exhibit operated by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and funded by U.S. Congress, as announced in a Castle Museum press release.

“Work and the workplace have gone through enormous changes between the mid-19th century, when 60 percent of Americans made their living as farmers, and the early 21st century,” the press release states.

The aim of the exhibit is to tell stories about the hard work of Americans of multiple ethnicities, ages, genders and classes and how it helped shape the nation.

The touring schedule on the SITES website indicates that “The Way We Worked” has already been to museums in South Dakota, Iowa and Ohio, and will be headed to Minnesota after its run at the Castle Museum is finished.

Bringing the national exhibit to a local level, there is also a companion exhibit called “Saginaw at Work.” While the main exhibit features pictures from the National Archives, “Saginaw at Work” adds historic photos and objects from the Castle Museum’s archive.

“Images included in the exhibit will focus on construction, farming, factories and many other trades and professions,” the press release states. “An interactive portion of the exhibit will encourage children and adults to explore a mid-20th century office.”
