Candidate Profile: Elizabeth Warren

This is the third part of a weekly series highlighting the Democratic presidential candidates for the 2020 race.

Elizabeth Warren is in favor of:

  • Abolishing capital punishment, ending cash bail, and eliminating private prisons.
  • Paper ballots to ensure election security.
  • An “Ultra-Millionaire Tax” on the richest 75,000 richest families in the U.S. to help pay for universal childcare and student loan debt relief.
  • Increasing the capital gains tax to the same rate as ordinary income, raising taxes 7% on corporate profits over $100 million and has proposed a 2% annual tax rate on household net worth from $50 million to $1 billion.
  • Raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, as well as broad paid family and medical leave for up to 12 weeks.
  • Banning for-profit charter schools and ending federal funding for all types of charter schools.
  • Universal free public college, cancelling up to $50,000 of student loan debt for 95% of loan borrowers, and increasing the pay of teachers.
  • Banning unlimited spending in politics, eliminating the electoral college and restoring voting rights to felons after prison.
  • Banning fracking everywhere and imposing government regulations to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Banning assault weapons and implementing universal background checks.
  • Medicare-for-all that fully covers every service and procedure. Warren has outlined a plan on how her Medicare-for-all plan will be transitioned to over the course of three years.
  • Legalizing marijuana and erasing past convictions.
  • Breaking up Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Apple. Warren also wants to undo blockbuster mergers, such as Facebook buying WhatsApp and Instagram.
