To see art in person is a completely different experience than to see pictures of it on a computer screen or in a newspaper. In person an art piece can be overwhelming, spiritual, and moving. For faculty member Randal Crawford art is not just a hobby but a living.

Crawford has been working with art ever since kindergarden when his teacher told him he was going to be an artist. His work is displayed in an exhibit called “Construction Deconstruction” which is featured in Delta College’s art gallery, Galleria, located in the main entrance of the S-wing lobby. The exhibit took two months to make, mostly during Christmas break where Crawford worked non-stop.

Some of the pieces include ceramic pigs, self portraits and a suit that was Crawford’s father’s. The suit, the trickiest piece, required Crawford to cast himself in the suit so that the clay on top would dry and harden. Crawford proceeded to explain that he had to lay on the garage floor to cast himself in the suit. “My mom thought I was dead,” joked Crawford.

Crawford enjoys working with all types of mediums and it shows in his exhibit. “Construction Deconstruction” has art pieces on display that use paints, dyes, clay and other materials. “I like the idea of experimenting. I like to learn new techniques,” said Crawford. However, he does seem to lean toward one medium the most: clay. “Clay is the way,” said Crawford.

You can check out Crawford’s his display in the S-wing Galleria until Jan. 30.
