If you’re anything of a gamer, do yourself a favor and buy “Unravel.” The side-scrolling platformer is one of those rare gems that comes out of nowhere. The game is made by ColdWood Interactive out of Sweden, and if anything, I’m hoping that this game is a sign of more things to come from this developer.
“Unravel” is a very beautiful game in almost every aspect. The game has top-notch graphics, very intricate level design, a touching underlying story and a fantastic soundtrack to listen to while you’re swinging your way through levels.
The underlying story of “Unravel” follows Yarny as they travel through and restore the memories of an old woman. In the beginning, you are quickly introduced to the protagonist, a cute little creature made up of red yarn. At the end of each level, you are shown restored pictures in a scrapbook which were previously blurry before you finished the specific memory.
Now, this game is a puzzle platformer and it will frustrate you to no end. A couple of friends and I tried to beat this game without cheating or looking up the answers to puzzles on YouTube, but after hours of dumbfounded stares into the TV, and 60 more failed attempts, we caved. You’ll really need to think outside of the box in order to make it to the end of each level. The developers also threw in little collectibles called “secrets” that are hidden throughout each level, and if you’re a completionist, you’re really gonna have your work cut out for you.
All in all, the game is only about seven hours long, 10 if you really take your time. My only gripe with the game is that I wish it was longer. Even in saying that “Unravel” has a good replayability factor, and it’s fun trying to speed through levels, and find a way to collect all the secrets I missed on my first playthrough.
“Unravel” is a game that can, and should, be loved by everyone. The game immerses you in it’s beautiful world, and gives you fun and addictive gameplay. It’s well worth the $20, and won’t leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.
