For all of those who enjoy the fall festivities, this is a perfect way for you and your family to kick off the fall season. Sept. 10 was the opening day for Johnson’s Giant Pumpkin farm located in Saginaw. Though it wasn’t blue skies and sunshine, this didn’t stop the farm goers from enjoying themselves with their pumpkins, fresh donuts, homemade goods, entertainment and much more. Johnson’s Pumpkin Farm had a busy opening weekend and everyone was hard at work for the start of this season.
According to owner Gerald Johnson, this time of year is anything but out of the ordinary. Johnson was raised in the Cash Crop Industry, and has been farming pumpkins for 32 years. Though always a farmer, pumpkins were not originally in the picture. When Johnson’s children were small, he wanted to teach them how crops grew. Johnson then purchased pumpkin seeds and planted what turned into 3 giant pumpkins. Unsure of what to do with them, he put them up for sale on the side of the road.
Johnson says, “They sold very quickly.”
He then continued this pattern, growing the numbers of pumpkins each year, until it became the Giant Pumpkin Farm it is today. Johnson also recognizes the small Native American community in which his business resides. There are Native American displays, such as a teepee and Indian statues and other artifacts, throughout, along with the other artistic arrangements that can be found within the farm. Aside from exhibits, there are: homemade crafts, concessions, pumpkins, and other goods that are available for purchase. Each weekend there is also entertainment that is geared for all ages such as: live music, magicians, clowns, and themed events.
“The main focus is family atmosphere,” Johnson states.
Johnson is also very proud of his super staff for working hard and maintaining the business he treasures. Johnson’s Giant Pumpkin Farm is open daily from 9am-7pm until Oct. 31. So mark your calendars and pick your pumpkins at Johnson’s Giant Pumpkin Farm!
