Stages of Discovery apply arts to the community

By Kyle Grew, Staff Reporter.

The Stages of Discovery are hosting their Third Annual Halloween Makeup Workshop The workshop will cost $10 and will be in the lobby of the Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Ave. on Oct. 25 from 12 to 3 p.m.

The event will be coordinated and taught by Carrie Butler. Butler is a graduate of SVSU and has a degree in Health Care but in her time at college she participated in theatre classes and programs for three and a half years.

Butler and other volunteers will demonstrate how to properly apply makeup for a variety of different costumes. There will be examples of how to make different props and what materials to use to apply a fake beard.

One of the large focuses of this workshop is the health side of applying and storing the makeup. Butler said, “You should always label your makeup as soon as you open it.” People often don’t realize the amount of bacteria that builds up on makeup in such a short period of time.

One of the main purposes for doing something of this nature is to reach out to the community and allow for the arts to reach people they might otherwise miss. It’s Butler’s belief that, “communities are losing the arts”.

Participants who were involved last year can expect something different from the zombie focus of the previous year. For now the theme is being kept secret.
Funding for the makeup workshop was provided through the Dow Corning Foundation Donor Advisory Fund.
