Should Delta offer more programs for psychology?

By Josie Dudek, Section Editor.

Through the evolution of society, Psychology has become a more viable part of our everyday world. For students like you and I, getting a start at a community college can be a huge help in saving money, easing into the college experience and getting a head start on a future career. Unfortunately, Delta has limited access to certain programs, Psychology being a big one.

As we all know, General Psychology is a basic education requirement for many paths a student may take, but beyond that, Psychology classes are scarce. When looking at the Delta website, there is an abundant list of Psychology classes “offered,” but when registering for classes, you may find many of these classes are actually never offered. This has caused me to get my hopes up semester after semester, but mostly has made me question why Delta doesn’t have more classes tailored to Psychology students.

Being a Psychology major, I want to make sure I am properly preparing myself for the long road of education I have ahead of me, unfortunately, through Delta, the closest I can get to a Psychology degree is an Associate in Arts. If you look up “Psychology” on the Delta website, a brochure for Delta’s Pre-Psychology Major program pops up, but the information is very sparse and vague.

My opinion is Delta should make a greater stride at helping prepare future Psychologists for the career ahead of them. Looking at all of the attention Delta gives to nurses, dental hygiene, and much more in the medical field, finding the funds to employ more Psychology professors and investing in re-opening some of the apparent Psychology classes offered, would be a great asset to bring to Delta College. Although it is a newer concept, Psychology is a crucial part to the medical world, and should be recognized as one through Delta.
