Half Mile Handmade is the place to shop at if you’re looking for quality handmade goods from artisans all over Michigan. Here you’ll find tables full of pins, stickers, gifts for pets, niche interests and a wall full of cards for any occasion. Sadly, this shop is set to close on Dec. 24 due to lack of sales.

Capri Wisniewski opened Half Mile Handmade back in June of 2016, after making her own handmade business and deciding to pursue it full time. She was inspired by the “makers movement” in Columbus, Ohio, and felt motivated to create a space for sharing and collaboration with fellow makers.

Wisniewski discussed the struggles she faced trying to keep up with online shopping, a fight many small businesses are familiar with.

“Perhaps I’m a bit old fashioned, but I have always loved shopping in person for things. So it’s been very difficult for me to watch shopping transition to an online space,” Wisniewski said. “I tried to create a website to keep up with the times, but it seems like we haven’t got much traction or sales there either.”

Saginaw Bay Trading Co., located on 601 Washington Ave in Bay City, is perfect for your outdoorsy needs. This is the spot to grab extra carabiners or some Michigan made snacks, carrying a variety of goods made for hiking and camping, along with other gifts.

Violets Blue, on 115 4th St., Bay City, is an eclectic shop that offers plants, décor, toys and kitchenware you would never find anywhere else. It’s hard to leave this shop empty handed!

My Secret Garden, on 600 Saginaw St., Bay City, sells clothing of all styles, children’s toys, kitchenware, home décor, and most importantly: Jellycats. This shop offers gift wrapping at checkout and typically has samples of savory dips available as you shop.

Little House, 924 North Water St., in Bay City, has jewelry, clothing, candles, wall art and home décor for all styles. They carry stunning handmade gifts and fun décor for all age groups.

“At the end of the day, I know I gave this little shop my all, and I’m very proud of what I was able to create with the help of so many talented people,” Wisniewski said. “Showcasing the work of so many people in a storefront has been one of the highlights of my life that I will truly treasure forever.”

By supporting local shops, you’re not only buying unique gifts, but you’re also contributing to the dreams and efforts of dedicated individuals. Each handmade item tells a story of hard work, passion, and spirit. This holiday season, let’s celebrate the people behind small businesses and the connections they bring to our community and personal lives.
