Delta College wants to help students pay for school. With funds from local donors, foundations, and businesses, Delta College students can get up to $1,000 to help with the cost of their education.
To apply, a Delta ID number is needed. When applying, students have to answer two essay questions that will be rated on content, grammar, punctuation, and must meet a 150 word minimum but can’t be longer than 250 words. Some scholarships may ask an extra question at the donor’s request.
Mary Harding, the coordinator of scholarships, recommends that applicants have someone proofread their essays to make sure nothing is missing and that the grammar and punctuation are correct. “Proofreading is important,” explains Harding.
The time to apply is Dec. 15, 2014 through Feb. 10, 2015. If the deadline of February 10, 2015 is missed, applications will not be considered for a scholarship.
If a student is taking 12 or more credits, they can receive $500 for the fall semester and $500 for the winter semester. Students taking 9 to 11 credits can receive $375 for fall and winter semester. For six to eight credits, a student can receive $250 for fall and winter semester. If a student takes anything less than six credits, they will not receive a scholarship.
Students who receive a scholarship are required to write a thank-you letter to the scholarship provider.
Last year, $532,000 was awarded in private scholarship dollars, and if all the money doesn’t get spent it goes back into the account to get redistributed the next year. Delta receives about 1,000 applicants each year and 40 to 50 percent of applicants get the scholarships.
To apply, go to Delta’s home page at www.delta.edu and click on the link that says “Apply for Scholarships Now.” If more information is needed, please call the Foundation Office at 989-686-9224.
