The average sports fans and viewers would most likely consider basketball a limited contact sport. However, that’s what separates the players from the spectators. ‘Limited’ contact is not something that happens when you play post especially if you’re matched up against Lauren Rogers. The second year forward and shooting guard for the Lady Pioneers considers the physical aspect of playing down low one of the position’s greatest perks.
“I get to body people a lot,” says Rogers.
Rogers says that ever since she picked up a basketball in the second or third grade that she’s just had a knack for the game. All those years of experience have given her quite an edge while playing for the Lady Pioneers. When describing herself, she only thought of one word, “versatile.”
The 19-year-old Bay City native played out her high school career donning the purple and gold at Bay City Central. During her time there, she was named to the first team All-Valley, led the Saginaw Valley in scoring, and was an honorable mention for all-state.
During her first season at Delta she averaged 7.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game with a FG percentage of 37.8 percent and a FT percentage of 79.5 percent.
Rogers believes the upcoming season looks promising for the Lady Pioneers and that incoming freshman starting their first season at Delta must play a key role on the team.
“It just takes time to get used it all,” says Rogers.
When she’s not on the court, Rogers can be found in the classroom where she’s in pursuit of a criminal justice degree. She remains undecided on a transfer school.
Rogers looks forward to playing Kalamazoo this season citing their national ranking as just more incentive to beat them.
