Brooke Schutte, a recent gradute of Arenac Eastern High School, is playing her first season with the Lady Pioneers basketball team. Schutte was an excellent student and graduated as the valedictorian of her class.

On top of excelling in the classroom, she was also awarded All-State honors in both basketball and softball. In basketball, Schutte won a district championship, joined the 1,000-point club and holds the school scoring record with 1,112 points.

Schutte’s impressive resume made playing basketball at the next level possible.

“Coach Kelly had a big impact on it,” says Schutte. “She came to watch me play—and I didn’t even think about Delta—then she showed me all of the great things about it.”

After second guessing herself, she decided that college basketball was something she wanted to do.

“When I was a freshman in high school it was a really big dream of mine,” says Schutte.

A combination of skills and experience led her to become one of the team captains.

“Off the court, I play a big role in kind of communicating with my team and keeping up with them, seeing how their doing in their classes,” says Schutte. “On the court, it’s communication too—making sure everyone is doing their job and working as hard as they can in games and practice.”

One way to identify Brooke Schutte at a basketball game is by looking for the girl in the mask. During her senior year she broke her nose by being head-butted by her teammate. Doctors told her if she wanted to play, she would have to wear the mask.
