MIDLAND – Northwood University’s own varsity esports team took home gold in the 2023 Collegiate Smash Riptide Championship finals against Michigan State University, winning both rounds 2-0. Out of the six members of the Super Smash Bros video game team, two competitors happen to be local to the Tri-City area. Jackson Wallace is a graduate of Midland High School and Seth Reed can call Bay City Western High School his alma mater. As well as taking down the Spartans, Northwood’s smash team also beat out University of Cincinnati, Akron, Oakland, Purdue, Lawrence Tech and Notre Dame.
