Being confined to your home for weeks at a time has a silver lining: more time to play video games! Delta College students in ENG-115: Survey of Mass Media shared these game recommendations that are helping them survive the isolation of this “stay-at-home” season.
“Doom Eternal”
By Timoteo Fulgencio
Having just been released on March 20, ”Doom Eternal” is the sequel to 2016’s ”Doom” – a reboot of the original series released in the 1990s. Forewarning: ”Doom Eternal” is not for the faint of heart. In this game, you play as a character simply known as the Doomslayer (or Doomguy, if you played the original) who traverses through levels set on Earth, in space, on Mars and in hell as he fights the legions of hell and swarms of the undead trying to stop the invasion from making Earth a new hell.
Along with the campaign, there is also a unique battle mode – a two-versus-one asymmetrical multiplayer mode in which two players play as demons and one plays as the Doomslayer, competing to see who comes out on top. ”Doom Eternal” is a perfect way to relieve some of the stress that these trying times have surely caused. So sit back, wrap yourself in your favorite blanket and let the sounds of heavy metal surround you as you ”Raze Hell.”
“Untitled Goose Game”
By Benjamin Hendrickson
Developed by House House, this zany, cartoon-styled game is sure to ruffle some feathers. Now on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and the PC via Steam, you can play as the mischievous Goose in a sleepy British village, wreaking havoc on the locals with your cute, goose-like demeanor. As the Goose, mortals of all kinds fear as you waddle the plane of their realm! Not really, but you could, say, tie a man’s shoes together while he’s not looking with your fabulous beak and “honk” at the man to make him run while his shoes are tied together. Or perhaps you would like to have a picnic at the park; as the Goose, the only obvious answer for where and how to acquire picnic supplies is to steal them from the local gardener.
“Untitled Goose Game” allows you to be the goose you were truly and always meant to be. No, you can’t fly, but you can flap your wings and swim! For just $20 on most platforms, or free-to-play with Xbox Live Game Pass, this puzzle-based indie game is a surefire way to kill at least 30 minutes before you panic and realize you have an assignment due at 11:59 p.m. YouTube creator “videogamedunkey” explains the game masterfully in his video, “Goose Game,” as he demonstrates the not-so complicated stealth mechanics and humor of the game.
“Spiderman PS4”
By Chad Andres
This “Marvel” of a game is made by Insomniac Games and a slice of what every comic fan wanted in a superhero game. This story focuses on an older Spider-Man, and deals with crime, supervillains and, scariest of all, rent. The mechanics of the game are perfect with smooth fighting reminiscent of the “Batman Arkham” franchise, and a swinging mechanic that makes traversing the well-designed New York City a pleasure rather than a chore. I would highly recommend this game to anyone seeking a fantastic story and gameplay experience!
“Call of Duty: Black Ops 2”
By Sara Miller
I don’t really play video games, but my brother showed me this game and I really enjoy it. This game can be a single or multiplayer game you play on the Xbox. It is a first-person shooter where you get to kill zombies and try to make it as far as you can.
Along the way, you can get “perks” which are things to help you play better in the game. You get points when you kill zombies or rebuild things which you use to buy perks or buy different guns. You can play with other people and be on the same team or opposite teams. It’s a pretty simple game but I think it’s really fun and I love to play it with my family.
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”
By Garrett May
Quarantined and with all their homework done, what do some of Delta’s students turn to? “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” has been out for a solid four months now and the amount of people that are currently playing it is astounding.
With online multiplayer, you can easily “hang out” with any of your friends without exposing them to any of your respiratory illnesses. To add onto this, there is a part of the game that is completely free! Yes, you heard right. You can jump into a full-on battle royale game in “Call of Duty” for no less than a good Wi-Fi connection. This makes the game even more appealing to almost any dedicated gaming college student.
All in all, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” is a solid game for anyone (over the age of 17, as it’s rated M) and is a super refined way of hanging with your friends. Just make sure you don’t burn any holes in your eyes!
“Just Dance 2020”
By Julia Dinauer
“Just Dance 2020” is a rhythm/dancing game. Usually with a supported camera connected to the console, the game tracks your dance moves and provides a score based on how well you mimic the on-screen dancers.
With more than 40 pop songs – from today’s top hits to popular throwbacks – you’re sure to find a good jam! Don’t worry, this game can have multiple players so you can compete with your friends or family and show off your slick moves! Or just hop on and dance by yourself; we won’t judge! But wait, there’s more!
With the full-body dance moves, “Just Dance 2020” also functions as an aerobic workout. So quit stressing about the virus, and JUST DANCE!
“Destiny 1”
By Noah Klopf
When it comes to video games, I am definitely not an expert, but if I were to recommend any game I would say “Destiny 1.”
“Destiny 1” came out when I was in seventh grade and I pretty much played it the whole year. The basis of the game is that it’s in a future time when aliens have pretty much taken over the world and your main objective is to go through and defeat them until you get to the final boss.
During the journey, you pick up weapons and armor that upgrades your light level. If you are looking for a good game to play that is both addicting and definitely worth your time, go buy “Destiny 1.” There is a “Destiny 2” but don’t waste your time with that one; it was very disappointing.
“Minecraft”
By Jacob Halifax
“Minecraft” is a survival-adventuring game that is loaded with possibilities to leave your imagination as the limit. The main goal of “Minecraft” is to collect and craft resources in order to defeat the Ender Dragon at the end of the game, but there are many other aspects of the game to enjoy!
The path leading to the end of the “main quest” is full of opportunities from world exploration and monster hunting, to villager trading and horse taming. Besides the single-player part of the game, you can log on to online servers to play with others or even play mini-games others have made within “Minecraft.” It’s the game that keeps you busy as you have fun.
“No Man’s Sky”
By Jerrod Rachow
This game is not just an open world but an open universe! You are dropped onto an unknown planet with very limited resources. As the game progresses, you are able to explore new solar systems and planets. Along the way, you can complete missions or just explore. The game allows you to make money and build bases.
The potential of this game is nearly limitless with billions of visitable planets! Each planet has its own landscape and ecosystem complete with flora and fauna. You even get paid for new discoveries! I believe that this open universe style gameplay is the future of gaming. While the single player game is very fun, it can get repetitive after a while. The ability to play online with friends helps keep it interesting.
