The last time these two teams met on Jan. 16, Delta escaped with a six point victory. The rematch provided Delta a chance to show how much they had improved since their last meeting. The Pioneers started off with a quick lead and never relinquished it in a game that wasn’t as close as the score implies.
Martel Handley has been on an absolute tear lately, scoring in double figures in nine of the last 10 games, with six in a row. He had 25 points to go with 11 rebounds in this one. Jacob Thomann added a career high 13 points, including a monster reverse dunk in the second half that really put away the game.
“Martel has been playing really well lately, and Jake came off the bench and gave us great minutes through the game,” says Head Coach Carlos McMath.
Delta played a complete game from start to finish, with playoff position on the line, every game still has plenty of meeting for the Pioneers.
“We’re coming into every game mentally in tune and practicing better than ever,” says Handley.
The win puts Delta at 8-5 in conference play on the season, with three games left to play. The Pioneers have Parents’ Night Feb. 24 against St. Clair Community College.
