Learn about Michigan barmaids civil rights fight

By La’Niya Jones

UNIVERSITY CENTER – Join the fight for Michigan barmaids with Dr. Amy French of the History Department at Delta College. This event is free and open to the public and will take place on Mar. 1 in conference room N007 from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Dr. French will be talking about the journey and fight Michigan barmaids are having against a discrimination law that was passed in 1945 (Public Act 133). This law prohibited women from bartending in areas with a population over 50,000 unless the owner of the bar was the woman’s husband or father.

If you would like to take a deeper look into this law before the event, check out the Goeseart v. Cleary case. This law went against and restricted women’s labor rights, and barmaids fought back, which led them to the U.S. Supreme Court. Stop in on this event to learn about their fate.
