UNIVERSITY CENTER – At their first meeting of the year, the Delta College board of trustees is expected to vote on president Jean Goodnow’s goals for 2020.
Every year, Goodnow sets goals for the college, which are evaluated by her colleagues. In a near-unanimous vote, the board struck down her goals at the December meeting, with several trustees asking her to revise them.
“The diversity goal is one that they’re primarily interested in, in seeing some specifics on it,” Goodnow said back in December. “So the president and the administration […] need to go back to working with our team on a few more specifics.”
The diversity goal calls for increasing enrollment of students in minorities, as well as increasing minority employment. Delta College states on their website that they seek to promote diversity and inclusion on campus, welcoming students and employees of different ethnic backgrounds and minority groups.
The trustees asked Goodnow to elaborate on this, and other goals, adding more specifics to them and making them less broad, so that the issues can actually be addressed. One of the main issues with the diversity goal is the decline of male students of color, a challenge that all colleges face, as Goodnow said.
Another major goal was the Midland community focus. Delta College is constructing a new downtown learning center in Midland, with plans to open January 2021. Goodnow told the Collegiate that she would be talking with her team about nailing down more specifics on the Midland Center.
The board of trustees meeting will take place Tuesday, January 14 at 7 p.m. in Room B151. To view the complete agenda, and for more information on the year’s meeting schedule and who the trustees are, visit https://www.delta.edu/board-of-trustees/.
