Bemo’s bar, an infamous music venue in Bay City, played host to the latest concert organized by Patrick Ewing’s Flattop, an alternative event organizer based out of Bay City.
The evening started with the band Worn Spirit from Lansing. There was a definite apathetic vibe that shone through the wall of effected guitar tones and pounding drums. The lyrics convey a strong sense of wanting what was just out of reach… A feeling I often get when I am sitting on the couch and my jar of Nutella is visible but just out of reach.
As Worn Spirit played, I began looking around for the source of the increasingly present smoke that began filling the bar. I expected to see 20 vapees standing behind me. Instead, I found that an excited fog machine enthusiast was just having a foggy good time.
Next up, long haired band mates from The Most Dangerous Animal, a Michigan based band, took the stage. The grungy punk rock vibe offered a wicked rhythm section, accompanied by screaming vocals. The group blended electric guitar and electronic samples, pulling in the audience and really feeling something onstage! The set helped to bring the energy up for Palomino Witchcraft.
To close the night, and pack the house, was the Bay Area’s own Palomino Witchcraft. Their mellow rock sound reminded me a bit of the band Foxing. Palomino were technically tight, and their effortless musicianship onstage made it clear why so many people showed up to support the local bands.
The evening was a fun, ear ringing good time. The event was an excellent example of how many bands and musicians live and chose to use their magical talents in the great state of Michigan.
