If you have listened to Los Angeles based surf punk band FIDLAR, then you’ve probably heard lyrics like “all I want for breakfast is my good cocaine,” off their debut self-titled album (along with the numerous demos).
Their second full-length album titled “TOO” delivers 12 new tracks that will grab your attention with the opening power chords.
They’re not singing about drugs, partying and cheap beer anymore. A long-time listener, like myself, could say they have matured and have taken a more sober approach to the writing process. Their frontman Zac Carper has struggled with drugs and alcohol — which is noticeable on their previous recordings. But he’s made a turn for the better and you can hear those thoughts and feelings on “TOO.”
The album’s first single, titled “40oz On Repeat,” shows a more indie punk feel providing honest lyrics like,“Everybody’s got somebody, everybody but me. Why can’t anybody just tell me that I’m somebody’s.”
Other songs like “Punks” start off with deafening guitars and screaming vocals, showcasing the traditional FIDLAR sound. These two songs set the album’s tone and show you what these guys are all about this time around.
FIDLAR has been a trip since 2011. I’ve seen them perform live a handful of times, and watched them continuously grow as songwriters.
I would suggest this record to a new listener who may need a little introduction (and a current listener so they can listen to it a thousand+ times).
