UNIVERSITY CENTER – Tenants and mobile home owners are now allowed to stay in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic even if they cannot pay the rent.
Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer just signed an executive order temporarily suspending evictions until April 17 at 11:59 p.m.
“Families across the state are facing a number of uncertainties, from concerns about their health and well-being and that of their loved ones to when their next paycheck will arrive,” Whitmer stated in a press release. “Worrying about whether they’ll be evicted from their home, apartment or mobile home should not be on this list.”
Jeff Donofrio, director of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, urges Michigan citizens to continue to put their health first and make smart decisions in order to help slow the spread of coronavirus.
“This order, in addition to Wednesday’s order extending the tax foreclosure deadline, will give renters and homeowners some peace of mind,” Donofrio stated in the press release.
In a press conference March 20, Whitmer also struck down a rumor suggesting that she would enact martial law in Michigan, saying this is false.
“There are actions that every one of us can and must take to mitigate the spread, to protect our fellow Michiganders, to limit the impact on our economy,” Whitmer said, reminding Michiganders to continue to follow CDC guidelines.
