The Michigan Association of Broadcasting has honored Delta Students at the Michigan Student Broadcasting Awards. Students from Kim Wells’ Media 3 class competed in the PSA category. Six students were honored for their contributions, and four students were awarded with first place.
“This is the second time we entered our work into the Michigan Student Broadcasting Awards,” said Delta Associate Professor Kim Wells. “I was looking for interesting ways to help develop student portfolios, because not every student is interested in broadcast news.”
Delta entered two PSAs into the contest. The first is an anti-smoking PSA and the other is a pro-recycling PSA. The anti-smoking entry received first place, while the recycling PSA received an honorable mention.
The students who worked on the anti-smoking PSA include Jesse Metz, Meghan Felch, Justin Mathews and Josh Pawlak. Those honorably mentioned were Luke Sochacki, Daniel Deitsch and Meghan Felch.
“It feels incredible to be honored by the MAB. I did a quite literal jump for joy when I found out we had won, and to win this award while representing Delta College makes it even better,” said Jesse Metz. “This was a competition involving all colleges and universities in the state and it just goes to show you what great things can be accomplished at a community college.”
For Metz, Delta and Wells went all out to provide students with the information and equipment they needed to succeed. “I wouldn’t have been able to win this award without the instruction I received at Delta College.”
The awards ceremony will be held on March 11 as part of the Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference. Wells hopes the experience will help students network and make connections in the broadcasting industry.
“This is something they’ll be able to put on their resumes, when they go to a job interview, they’ll be able to say that they’re award winners”, said Wells. “I’m very proud of what the students did and their hard work really paid off.”
If you’re interested in viewing the entries both PSAs are currently showing through Delta’s PBS station. The anti-smoking PSA currently airs on the main station, while the recycling PSA appears on the main and kids channel.
