Delta soccer remains undefeated going into playoffs
By Jacob Teets
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Pioneers improved their record to 11-0-1 after beating the now 7-7 Jackson College Jets and 11-3 Schoolcraft College Ocelots as the Pioneers look towards the playoffs.
The Pioneers beat the Jets 4-1 in a closer game than the team is usually used to playing. The Jets played hard, but it wasn’t enough to withstand the relentless style the Pioneers play.
It was sophomore night at Delta, which had all the parents of sophomores on the team go out onto the field before the game started to receive flowers and a gift basket. When asked about what it has been like to watch his daughter Abigail Hendy play for this team over the past two seasons, Todd Hendy had nothing but good things to say.
“It’s been phenomenal, it’s like a family and it has just been really entertaining, there’s great players and great parents and it’s been a wonderful experience with Delta College,” said Hendy.
The four goals scored in the game came from two of Delta’s best scorers, freshman forward Alahna Beckett and sophomore midfielder Brooke Swartz, with both scoring two apiece. .
In the 21st minute of the game Swartz was able to speed through the Jets defense and with a nice assist from Beckett was able to shoot the ball right past Jets goalkeeper Serenity Wieszciecinski for the goal. Almost two minutes later Beckett would get her chance to score and put the team up 3-1 going into the second half.
Alahna Beckett has made a big impact as a freshman for the Pioneers. When speaking with her grandfather Reese Beckett on the impact she has made as a freshman, he noted what it’s like to see her play well and her role as an all-around team player.
“It’s pretty exciting, no doubt about that. Exciting to see all the players actually playing well. She’s a team player and enjoys feeding the ball as much as scoring, I think,” said Beckett.
Goalkeeper Mia Warner played a great game, only allowing one goal to get by on nine total shots on goal by the Jets. This was Warner’s first goal given up the entire season, and with only one game before the region 12 championship game that’s an impressive feat by a goalkeeper.
The one goal Warner gave up to the Jets was to forward Aubrey Lauer in the first half. It was a race to the ball that Warner lost, leaving the net wide open for the score.
Pioneers beat Schoolcraft College 2-1
The Pioneers played Schoolcraft College on Saturday, winning a close game 2-1. Alahna Beckett scored both of Delta’s goals in the win. The victory secured the team’s eighth straight MCCAA championship. They own a record of 11-0-1 as they head into the NJCAA Region 12 Championship game.
The Region 12 Championship game will be played against Owens Community College this Saturday, Oct. 25 at 12 p.m.
