UNIVERSITY CENTER – Delta College has announced that they are donating personal protective equipment (PPE) to hospitals in the Great Lakes Bay Region to assist in the ongoing fight against the coronavirus.
In a press release this morning, Delta stated that several of their disciplines are coming together to provide 1,440 surgical masks, 24,000 gloves, 525 gowns, oxygen concentrators, flowmeters and safety goggles. In addition, Delta is loaning five ventilators to local hospitals, which are normally used for their respiratory care program.
Chemistry, respiratory care, technical trades, dental assisting, surgical technology and the simulation laboratory for nursing are Delta’s academic programs that are behind this donation.
The donation is in support of Delta’s partner organization Transforming Health Regionally in a Vibrant Economy (THRIVE), which aims to deliver improved health and sustained economic growth in the area.
Virginia Przygocki, dean of career education and learning partnerships, says the college wants to do their part to help those working in healthcare who are preparing for imminent shortages in much needed supplies.
“We know the supplies will be put to good use and we want to do all we can to support doctors, nurses and other medical personnel,” Przygocki said in the press release.
Delta has also donated ethanol and methanol to the Great Lakes Bay Manufacturers Association for the production of hand sanitizer, another critical item in the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is not the first thing Delta has done to assist hospitals in the coronavirus surge. On Tuesday, March 31, they announced that about 70 students in their nursing program would be moving straight to the workforce upon graduation.
This is thanks to temporary regulatory changes signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer on the previous day, allowing nurses to complete their programs online and enter the workforce.
