The Michigan Press Association has honored the Delta Collegiate with two awards at this year’s Better Newspaper Contest.
Matt Brown, Multimedia Director, won first place in the Division 3 for his Original Cartoon “Twelve Days of Delta”. Judges noted that it was a “nice variety of illustrations relating to everyday student life”.
Brown also won second place for his Editorial “Ghoulish costume goes viral”. Brown wrote the editorial in response to the media attention created when a local woman posted a photo of her Halloween costume. The woman went to a work party dressed as a Boston Marathon bombing victim. Judges noted that “it was interesting to see the editorial staff not focus on the issue of the woman wearing the costume but rather charging readers with trying to learn from the event and comment on another angle (i.e. social media and violence).”
