University Center, MI – Poor Ancilla. They had to have seen this one coming, yet there was nothing they could do. One game after Delta was shutout in a 7-0 thrashing at the hands of league leader Schoolcraft, it’s easy to imagine the motivation that was carried into Saturday’s contest with first year MCCAA member Ancilla College.
The Pioneer’s wanted to prove they were better than they played on Wednesday and they did so in outstanding fashion by shutting out the Chargers en route to a 6-0 home win to improve to 4-1 in the conference and 4-3 overall. Ancilla, meanwhile, remains winless for the season.
“This was a great response from a tough loss on Wednesday,” said head coach Paul Stenglein. “The girls played with passion and intensity today.”
Aleisha Jones got things going in the ninth minute with a goal on a deep cross from Gabrielle Sake to take a 1—0 lead. Three minutes later, Jones returned the favor when Sake scored on an assist from Jones to put DC up 2-0.
The score remained there until the second half when Alexis Traver scored on a far post cross from Kaleigh Blackburn. The Jones show continued after that as the freshman from Midland scored twice more to give Delta a 5-0 lead and record her first collegiate hat trick.
Cailin King finished the scoring with a goal in the 84 minute on an assist from Jessica Hegenauer. In all, six different Pioneers picked up assists on the day.
“This was an important conference win, and gave us valuable points towards our Region XII standings,” said Stenglein.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Benton Harbor to take on the Red Hawks of Lake Michigan Community College. Delta defeated LMCC, 3-2 in overtime to open the season. Game time is 1pm.
