Delta handily beat Henry Ford last time they met on Jan. 16—the visiting team was ready for them this time and really tested the Lady Pioneers.
“This time Henry Ford really stepped up,” says starting Point Guard Brooke Schutte. “We struggled more on defense this game which allowed them to stick with us for most of the game, but this game we played really well overall and as a team.”
The Lady Pioneers struggled to get a rhythm going on offense. They shot 36 percent from the field and an abysmal 28 percent from three—the shot the team typically relies on.
“Today the girls just played hard and pushed each other as they did all week in practice,” explains Assistant Coach Jason Brown.
Schutte had 20 points and five steals and Jayde Abenth added 17 points and seven rebounds. The game was close; it was not until Schutte scored seven unanswered points that Delta had some breathing room.
“I saw that we were struggling offensively,” explains Schutte. “I knew that I had to do something to get us going so we could build on our lead. Once I hit the first shot, I was feeling it. I wanted that win so badly and I could tell everyone else did. We needed a good game like this as we head into the last few weeks of our season.”
The win puts Delta at 8-5 in conference play on the year. The Lady Pioneers will celebrate Parents’ Night on Feb. 24 against St. Clair Community College.
