At approximately 1:45 this afternoon, Fire Chief Kerry Prieur and his team of 32 firefighters arrived at Bay Carbon Inc., 800 Marquette Ave., Bay City, MI 48706 to see it fully engulfed in a cloud of grey smoke.
The company, which manufactures a variety of graphite-based products, was operating at the time when the burning of graphite furnaces went out of control. The cause of the fire is still uncertain.
Although the building is decimated, Bay Carbon Inc.’s employees were evacuated safely and nobody was hurt.
Because of the chemicals and extremely high temperatures involved in this fire, Prieur and the 32 firefighters involved in the operation are letting the fire burn while they monitor it.
“It’ll take at least all night,” said Prieur, “it’ll probably take 24 hours for the furnaces to cool down.”
