We’ve all heard that the originals are always better, so I tried to keep my excitement in check when I heard that a remake of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” was airing on FOX.
The first time I saw “Rocky Horror” was in the Bay City State Theatre for a special 40th anniversary screening. The culture shock of the movie was, well, shocking but it quickly turned into a die hard love. It was such a unique plot with equally unique characters.
Among my favorite characters for the remake were Janet Weiss, played by Victoria Justice, Riff Raff, played by Reeve Carney, and Eddie, played by Adam Lambert.
In the original film, Janet was my least favorite character because of her annoying high-pitched songs. Victoria Justice blew me away with her vocals. She hit every note so flawlessly, I swear I heard the angels singing for a hot minute.
Riff Raff, the butler, was as creepy as I remember. With his hunched-over walk and mad guitar skills, Carney brought the Time Warp to life in the best way possible.
Eddie only graced the screen for about 5 minutes before getting killed and pushed out the window (by the way, I noticed the knife prop wasn’t anywhere near his torso) but he still stood out. Maybe I’m biased because I love Adam Lambert’s music, but there’s no denying his talent when he sang my favorite song of the show, “Hot Patootie.”
Now, let’s get one thing straight. No one can replace Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter. No one. But Laverne Cox gave him a run for his money. She sang and danced in a way that led me to believe she spent hours studying Curry’s scenes and songs. They were almost identical. However, she was not Tim Curry, therefore, she will never be Frank-N-Furter to me.
On that note, it warmed my heart when I saw his face on the screen playing the criminologist narrator. Him being on screen was the best tribute to the original film.
From the sets, costumes, makeup and actors the remake of “Rocky Horror” was well put together and definitely worth the watch. The original “Rocky Horror” will always hold a special place in my heart, but I can always make a little extra room.
