Two Delta students to speak at annual commencement ceremony

By Abigail Beckman, Staff Reporter.

The annual Delta Commencement is upon us. The ceremony will take place on campus in the gym on April 29 at 6 pm. with doors opening at 5 p.m. Every year, two graduating students share their journey and tell us how Delta changed their lives.

Kaitlin Brown is a commencement speaker for this year’s ceremony and will graduate with an Associate of Arts degree. She is transferring to Northwood University to study accounting/finance. She is also the Honors Leadership Board President. Crystal Starkey, Honors director and Phi Theta Kappa advisor, says “Her speech talks about how far she has come, and it’s a big deal.”

Brown says, “Being [a] commencement speaker at Delta means a lot to me. It’s a small way to give back to the school that has helped me become the person I am today. I have been blessed to have so many great professors, friends and staff at Delta who are continually supporting me. Looking back, Delta has been the change I needed to become the person I wanted to be.”

Christopher Davis is another commencement speaker for this year’s ceremony and will graduate with an associate degree in mechanical engineering technology and an Associate of Applied Science. Davis will study mechanical engineering at SVSU. He is also a student veteran, and Starkey says, “His inspiring speech reflects his personality and approach towards life.”

Davis shares, “Graduating from Delta, to me, is a way of justifying the sacrifices of my family. My wife and daughter are the reason I decided to get a degree and further myself in the workforce. They were the source of my drive to not just go to college but excel while in college, but they also suffered the most from this endeavor. I couldn’t have done this without their support and graduation will justify their sacrifices.”
