Lady Pioneers knock off Oakland, only 1 game back of division lead

The Lady Pioneers came into the Jan. 13 game looking to move to 3-1 in conference play against a quality Oakland team looking to stay above .500 in the conference. Delta shot a solid 54.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from three in a game in which they executed from start to finish and were able to grab a win 73-70.

“It feels good as a coach when you come up with a game plan and your players execute it,” says head coach Kelly Miller. “(We) worked hard at practice on the things we needed to do better and implemented them into tonight’s game.”

Lauren Rogers led the way in scoring with 19 points, Jayde Abenth had 15 points and Jenna Szostak had 14 points.

Four players in double figures shows that we’re not a one dimensional team,” says Miller.   “We stepped up and made free throws down the stretch, too.”

Delta at times struggled to move the ball past half court which caused turnovers and rushed shots, but when the offense was clicking it was tough to contain.

“Tonight’s game showed the progress that we always talk about, making strides to become better each practice and game,” says Miller.

The Lady Pioneers are now only one game back of conference leading Schoolcraft.
