For too many years I’ve walked through these apathetic halls and looked at your glazed eyes. And now, I’ve finally seen this place for what it is—a cardboard community college.
Most of the organizations and extra-curriculars here are just for show. Delta only has a student newspaper because it looks good when they go to their fancy community college conference in Ohio and Missouri.
When was the last time you heard about Citizens in Action, our political awareness group? I saw Change Your World Week—sorry, but a few tables and some poster boards don’t show much initiative. How are these 20-nothings going to motivate anyone into action? I’m not just attacking Citizens in Action—I’m attacking everyone at Delta who phones it in.
Delta doesn’t expect much out of us. We’re just community college students. Expectations are low. The school mostly supports the students when it looks good for their image—sure that’s great—but a sense of community would be nice too.
I don’t think Delta’s Facebook page has ever shared an article from the Collegiate. Seriously, stop congratulating the reporter from MLive, who never goes to board meetings, and share some words of encouragement with the student reporter who broke a major story, saved Q-TV and died for your sins.
But whatever, I’m not upset. This isn’t about me. I’d appreciate it if certain faculty and administration didn’t run away from me when I walked by but, it’s cool.
This place needs a lesson in communication. Professors and faculty should be required to check their email —which is the minimum level of communication an adult is expected to do. Most of the time, it seems like professors are just as clueless about what’s happening on campus as the students.
And I can’t go an hour without hearing about Squirrel Appreciation Day. We’re in college… right?
I don’t accept the excuse that no one cares because they’re only here for two years. First of all, don’t kid yourself: this is Delta. I’ve seen people spend 10 years on a 12 credit certificate. There are plenty of people here who want to make the Delta Difference™, but don’t, because they think no one will care.
Who runs the school’s social media? I never see anyone using the hashtags. Do we even have hashtags?
It’s not like the Collegiate has been perfect either. But, we try. All I’m asking for is better coordination. Maybe have a liaison to work with the different departments? It’s depressing how many people don’t know we have a student newspaper, senate or even poetry club.
I’m just trying to hold this place to a slightly higher standard. Maybe put the “community” back into community college. “Be the change” and all that. If you’d please go share my articles now on Facebook that would be great.
