From R&B inspired guitars that remind me of a dream to relaxed psychedelic rock solos, City and Colour returns strong with a new record titled “If I Should Go Before You.”
Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green, who started the band in 2004, revisits his melodic acoustic roots but this time he explores more than what he’s used to. Starting with the first track “Woman,” his noisy echoing guitar shines throughout and is complimented by his calm and laid back vocals.
My favorite track “Friends” has been on repeat and really sets the tone for this album. “Friends” showcases a guitar intro and bassline that keeps steady while the drums calmly play. Lyrics like “there’s a light I’m trying to find, between the water and open sky” will remain a favorite for me.
As a fan of Green’s work, including his other band Alexisonfire, I’ve watched him continue to grow musically and display this growth through records and live performances. If you don’t believe me, you can check the band out yourself at The Fillmore in Detroit on Nov. 5.
